The Freeman
EDITORIAL - Greatly grateful

As the paper marks its 99th year of existence today, we are truly grateful for the never-ending support we are getting from various sectors and individuals, especially those who, for decades, continue to have faith in us.

Of course, first and foremost, we honor the Cebuanos for believing in our capacity to keep them informed.  It is safe to say that, for the past 99 years, it is only The FREEMAN that has richly chronicled the modern history of Cebu – from the Cebuanos’ rise from the ashes of war, their resistance to a dictatorial regime, to their united thrust to pull off one of the greatest economic success stories the country has ever seen.

But today’s celebrations are just a glimpse of what would be a historic event for The FREEMAN as it turns 100 years old next year, a feat that would be hard for other community papers in the country to emulate given the industry’s changing landscape.

Truly, your paper prides itself in being part of Cebu’s rich history. For the past 99 years, it has been able to witness Cebuanos’ journey towards progress despite the many calamitous events that have tried to dampen their spirits.

The FREEMAN’s mission to continue informing Cebuanos for more decades is a task the paper is privileged to perform given Cebuanos’ undying support. The FREEMAN, despite the many challenges facing the industry, will always continue to exist to serve Cebu and its neighboring areas as it evolves into being the country’s largest regional paper.

We are greatly grateful to Cebuanos for giving us this privilege to celebrate another year of existence. As The FREEMAN starts knocking on the door of its centennial celebration, Cebu’s journalism is on the cusp of creating history.
