The 3rd District of Surigao

Centuries ago the Diocese of Cebu was vast as it included Mindanao. In the 1886 report by Fr. Felipe Redondo, the 3rd District of Surigao in Mindanao, aside from the Province of Surigao, had an annex, called the Bislig Command.

These were the parishes under the district: Butuan, created under the patronage of St. Joseph in 1622. Under its jurisdiction is the town of Tubay as an annex, there was also Cabadbaran which was a dependent, and Nasipit which was yet a visita. It was administered by the Augustinian Recollects until 1879 when it was taken over by the Society of Jesus.

Talacongon and Bunauan, these parishes were created on June 25, 1851 under the patronage of Immaculate Concepcion of Our Lady.

Mainit, created on October 18, 1851 under the patronage of St. Nicholas Tolentino.

Tagandan and Placer, these parishes were created on November 2, 1876 under the patronage of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Its mother parishes were Surigao and Gigaquit.

Surigao, created in 1655 under the patronage of San Nicolas Tolentino. It is the capital of the 3rd District of Mindanao.

Dinagat Island, founded on April 25, 1855 under the patronage of the Immaculate Concepcion.

Numancia, it was created as a parish on December 14, 1850 under the patronage of Our Lady of Carmel, its mother parish was Surigao.

Cabuntog, created on June 19, 1861 under the patronage of St. Thomas Villanueva. It has an annex, Dapa, which was the nearest point to Surigao.

Gigaquit, erected on December 14, 1850 under the patronage of St. Augustine.

Cantilan, according the Recollect fathers, was founded in 1622 under the patronage of the Most Immaculate Concepcion of Our Lady.
