Celebrating womanhood

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

They wore skimpy wear, dipped huge sponges into a pail of water with bubbles and rubbed it only a shiny car. They danced to the beat and twerked their bottoms in front of three judges. They flipped their hair and gave them the most seductive looks, only to be rejected in what was called a talent contest.

One judge said they wanted to see talent, not a group of girls washing a car. They wanted something that not everybody could do, something with a bang. It wasn't exactly my cup of tea either. I see women who wear these type of clothing as inappropriate to be out in the public. The body is a temple, the religious books say. By all means it should be protected, away from those who plan to exploit this.

They would say we have the freedom to express ourselves, yes that's true. While we celebrate the freewill of mankind, it is the careful choice not to put our own risk and safety. Women have rights and they should be protected by all causes. Showing off what is deemed to be sacred and private does not do any justice to how women in the past fought for the rights that we all enjoy now.

We celebrate Women's Month not because women are special but because of the triumph of the fighters in the past to have equal rights. History book would tell us that everything-from economical to political–was in favor of the men. There was a huge discrimination of abilities when you are female. They thought women could not do what men could do.

I may be biased, but the world around us would prove otherwise that we can also do things that men does. That being said, we are not objects, subject to your pleasure and desire. We are human beings that have skills and the heart to serve. Men wouldn't be in this world without their moms who are women as well.

Everything must be done with extra caution. While we celebrate womanhood and all the perks that we enjoy today from the fight of our ancestors, we should be careful not to exploit ourselves. Women should be praised, respected and loved: like we do to other human beings.

My snappiest salute to every woman who standup on the pain of criticism and doubt in the so-called open-minded society that we live in now. Some day we will achieve the community that we have always dreamed of where women are not of little value, but big people who play a significant role to men as well. It will be a long run but I know that with the evolving ideologies we will get there. So to every girl, don't say "I'm just a girl," instead say "I'm a girl." Be proud, we have come a long way.
