Festival of Spring: China's bridge for cultural exchange

ESSENCE - Ligaya Rabago-Visaya - The Freeman

It was an evening that nourished one's sight and soul. Last March 7, the Grand Ballroom of Waterfront Cebu City Hotel was swarmed by Filipino Chinese, politicians, parents and even students who witnessed the display of fascination, elegance and richness of the culture of China.

China has a wealthy reserve of priceless ancient artifacts that represent the artistic talent and diligence of Chinese people. Being so unique, exceptional, elegant and inspiring, the Chinese culture has fascinated and moved many people from all over the world.

Devoid of apprehensions and just relishing the richness of a country's rich culture, the knowledge and appreciation of culture brings understanding among diverse nationalities. As culture is deeply rooted on the collective dreams and aspirations of people, and once shared with across borders, it brings so much joy and happiness.

Initiated in 2009 by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, P.R. China, the Festival of Spring is an arts and culture show that aims to promote Chinese culture and to celebrate the Chinese New Year with overseas Chinese and local audiences.

Chinese New Year, also called Spring Festival, has more than 4,000 years of history, considered as the grandest and the most important annual event for Chinese people.

The Festival symbolizes reunion, harmony, happiness and hope. The "Cultures of China, Festival of Spring" has become an important part of Chinese New Year celebrations for overseas Chinese people as well as locals and has reached more than 200 cities around the world. It is a great way to celebrate the Spring Festival with traditional Chinese performances.

This most festive season on the Chinese calendar has become a bridge for cultural exchange, audiences packed in for a variety show. The riveting fusion of sound and visuals to present Chinese traditional and modern fashions as award-winning Opera singers, dancers and magicians provided the stage with effervescent colors, speckled textures and shapes that amused the engaged audiences.

National relationship is based on the affection of the people. Cultural exchanges serve as important bridges in promotion of mutual understanding and friendship between two countries and two peoples.

The event is a manifestation of the strong presence and influence of our Chinese brothers and sisters in Cebu. It also sends a resounding message of giving importance and appreciation of the arts and culture. The Chinese artists do not only bring joys of the Spring Festival, but also the goodwill and friendship of Chinese people to us.

With great commendation, kudos to all our Chinese brothers and sisters, and the patrons and patronesses of arts and culture!  [email protected]
