Sixty days?

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

I was shocked when Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said that he may extend the punishment for those who counterflow from 30 days to 60 days. Wow. That's two months of not having to be with your motorcycle or car. That's two months of imagining what would happen to your investment which you thought that would be your mode of transportation for the rest of your life. Or so it seemed.

Since the implementation of the executive order, a lot of groups have been expressing their concern on the harsh punishment set by the order. Others have also given their sentiments and said that it is a lesson to learn. Personally seeing the way the Cebu City Transportation Office handles their operations gives me a sense of pride that at this point, they have high morale with what they are doing. They are determined to put the order straight and to make Cebu City traffic as orderly as it can be. The effect dominoes up to the city of Mandaue. Lately, I have noticed that the motorcycles keep their bounds within the solid line. There are little to none who are brave enough to traverse the streets using the other lane. I guess the mindset has changed.

But until when? Maybe it is good enough while it is still there. I hope not. The Mayor of Cebu City specifically said that he might release them all before the one month expires since he only wants to instill discipline and for traffic rules to be upheld. The order said that he could do this since the clause stated that the impounding should not be less than thirty days. As for me, I think there is still no discipline yet.

The opinions on the punishment vary. Even I could not set a stand. I could say that it makes the motorist aware of the traffic rules or else there will be a price to pay such as leaving your vehicle for thirty days but it also puts the burden on those who are relying on their vehicle for a living. But then again, we are bound by rules and we are obliged to follow them.

The next week will be exciting as more groups continue to challenge this order. The traffic enforcers are playing cat and mouse with the drivers who are now well aware of their whereabouts. There will be those who will try to harass those in authority and try to win them over. I heard no one is exempted, and that there is just fair treatment for all.

I hope that everybody will just follow and stop threatening our enforcers. They are just doing their jobs in setting things in order. We all want roads where we can pass freely and use right? The Land Transportation Office did not give us licenses because we don't know the traffic rules. Unless you paid for your license to get one, then you must very ignorant. Drive safely and defensively.
