Education nowadays Sawang Calero Elementary School

READER'S VIEWS - Ms. Emilyn A. Jario - The Freeman

Education is like any other industry in many respects as it is subject to emerging and growing trends.  In fact, education is basically designed to respond to the continuously changing needs of a developing society.  That is the whole premise of education in the first place: as society changes so does education.

So it is of great interest for me to look at what the new and growing trends are in the field.  Modern day education is all about innovation, accessibility, and suitability. From kindergarten to university, students are encouraged to learn through interactive and practical tools. Higher education is more career-oriented today than ever before.

Today, our educational system looks much different than before when I was a student. In recent years, we have been undergoing major transitions in education. Children of today grow up immersed in a world of digital technology. Information is now freely available to everyone. It is powerful. Digital technology can get information, store information, do calculations and connect people in new ways.

Computer and internet evolution in the past few years have been staggeringly fast. A computer that used to fill an entire building in 1965 has about the same computing power as a modern-day cellphone. Most of the popular forms of media like TV, radio, and print are slowly being nudged from their pedestal by the internet.

Everything seems to have changed drastically these couple of years, and this includes the K+12 education system. The trend in K+12 these days is that learning institutions should try their best to keep up with the recent advances in technology to better teach their students. As a teacher, it is part of the job description to keep up with the latest in educational innovations. Failure to do so, how would we keep our students' interest?

Technology is growing at a very rapid pace. It seems like every day, there is some new gadget that will help us learn better and faster.  With the emergence of the internet and social media as a teaching tool, all students these days are abreast with the information technology, and most of them are using social media networks to share their thoughts and to support each other.

Educators these days know how to harness the power of the internet and social media to get in touch with their students, where they share and hear thoughts.

It is in the 21st century model that regards learners and teachers as partners in education, with students creating and collaborating and teachers supporting, directing, and coaching student efforts.

Increased responsibility for students, as teachers shift to a supporting role in the classroom, they will be transferring more responsibility to students for their own learning.

Increasing technology integration and personalized learning will drive students to be more self-directed and self-disciplined. This trend has the potential to accelerate learning and produce more college-ready high school graduates plus balanced by frequent and effective coaching. These changes align with a vision of learning as student-directed and student-empowered setting.

The impact of learning becomes more interactive and instruction that is less teacher-centered and more communal, with a focus on knowledge-sharing and knowledge-building.  These are promising signs that show the educational system in the country is improving and no longer stagnant.

It is noteworthy that traditional methods of teaching and learning still carry great importance; it is only their integration with new technology and strategies that have introduced many new trends in education.

We should also consider the fact that current trends in education are constantly evolving, so more directions will emerge in the future. We need to embrace the change as it happens, because this is the only way to remain connected to the world of knowledge.
