SUV driver in hit-and-run of street sweeper charged

MANILA, Philippines — Criminal charges have been filed against the driver of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) who injured a 63-year-old street sweeper during a hit-and-run accident in BF Homes, Parañaque.

In an interview with The STAR, city police chief Col. Renato Ocampo said they filed a complaint for reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries against Raymond Zaparain before the Paranaque prosecutor’s office on Sunday.

Based on closed-circuit television footage (CCTV), Bacus was sweeping the road in Barangay BF Homes when she was run over by the SUV driven by Zaparain on Saturday.

Bacus was rushed to the Ospital ng Parañaque and later transferred to the Philippine General Hospital in Manila.

Police said Bacus is in critical condition.

Zaparain tried to escape. He was arrested after he was identified through CCTV.

National Capital Region Police Office chief Brig. Gen. Jonnel Estomo condemned the act of the suspect.

The victim’s son, Jade, posted on Facebook that his e-wallet where funds donated by people for the victim was hacked.
