UP Cebu, USPF turn back foes in Alegado Cup
CEBU, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu Fighting Maroons and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers downed separate foes in come-from-behind fashion at the start of the first ever Alegado Mayor’s Cup Inter-Collegiate Basketball Invitational Tournament on Saturday night, September 7, at the Consolacion covered court.
JZ Dizon fired 22 points to power the Fighting Maroons to a 69-57 drubbing of the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.
Matt Flores and Kent Joshua Cabanlit connived for 23 points for UP Cebu, which trailed for most of the way but dropped a devastating 19-5 bomb in the final quarter to pull the rug from under the stunned Warriors.
James Gica was the lone double-digit scorer for USC with 11 points.
In the other game, Jasper Lumingkit netted 15 points while Janjan Peteros and Mark Netos tallied 14 markers each as the Panthers subdued the Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges (CRMC) Mustangs, 82-74.
The Panthers were down by two at halftime, 43-45, but launched a fierce 21-10 counter-attack in the third period to grab the lead, 64-55, for good.
Jericho Montecalvo paced CRMC with 12 points while Jack Roa and Earl Laniton each scored 10 in a losing effort.
