Catmon, Mandaue slug it out for GUV Cup volleyball crown
CEBU, Philippines — The battle for supremacy in the One Cebu Island Governor’s Unity Volleyball (GUV) Cup for Women 2022 boils down to only two teams - Catmon and Mandaue City.
And with the ultimate prize at stake that goes along with the bragging rights as they best volleybelles in this side of the archipelago, expect a dogfight as Catmon and Mandaue slug it out for the championship of the province-wide tilt organized by the Cebu Volleyball Association (CEVA) in partnership with the Cebu Provincial Tourism Office.
The five-set title clash begins at 1 p.m. at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
Catmon and Mandaue earned the right to fight for the coveted crown after topping the six-team semifinal round contested in the past two days.
Catmon, a nothern Cebu town that maintained its lofty billing as a volleyball powerhouse for years, completed a rousing five-game sweep to emerge as semis topnotcher while Mandue ranked second with a 4-1 win-loss record.
The Catmon belles slammed Tabogon and Lapu-Lapu City before outclassing Mandaue, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21 in duel of unbeaten teams. They kept the fire of their hot hands burning to crush Dalaguete, 25-21, 25-19, and Cebu City, 25-18, 25-16 for a perfect 5-0 mark going into the gold-medal match.
Mandaue, on the other hand, bounced back with aplomb after falling down to Catmon.
Mandaue first vented its ire on Lapu-Lapu City, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21, before whipping Tabogon, 25-22, 22-19 to seal the second and last spot in the grand finale.
