OCCCI D-League selection to clash with Magis Eagles
CEBU, Philippines — To test the competitive level of their players and at the same time drum up their newly-minted league, the organizers of the OCCCI D-League Inter-School Pre-Season Basketball Tournament will be bringing in the reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) champions Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles to Ormoc City in Leyte for a pair of exhibition matches on February 4-5 at the Ormoc Superdome.
OCCCI D-League commissioner Joel Hinay, together with his deputy Manuel Mislang Jr., OCCCI-Cebu branch manager Rowell Flores, and league coordinator Van Halen Parmis, finalized everything during a meeting with SHS-Ateneo de Cebu athletic director Jon Ralph Inot and Magis Eagles head coach Rommel Rasmo last Tuesday afternoon at the SHS-AdC in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.
“Ang purpose ani is to promote ang among gisugdan nga OCCCI D-League didto sa Region 8 (Eastern Visayas),” said Hinay.
In their ongoing pre-season games that kicked off last week, Hinay said they spotted some promising cagers from the 15 teams in high school division.
“Nakita namo ang potential players sa 15 ka teams nga ni-submit sa high school. So amo gi-negotiate matag team nga mo-pick mi og player from each team to match-up Ateneo de Cebu. That would bring more crowd and further drum up the interest of people about our league,” Hinay continued.
For that purpose, Hinay said they are offering free food and accommodation to all interested coaches who will be coming over to their place to watch the games and scout for talents.
“We are doing this para makita pud sa coaches ang mga potential players gikan sa nagkadaiyang lugar ug schools sa among dapit. Daghan kaayo mi og potentials nga na-discover nga pwede pud matan-aw sa coaches ug hopefully ilang matabangan through scholarship,” said Hinay.
The showdown between the OCCCI selection and the Magis Eagles, led by Batang Gilas member and CESAFI Juniors MVP Jared Bahay, will culminate the OCCCI D-League pre-season tilt.
“Amo gipahigayon kining pre-season aron ma-assess namo ang among kapasidad nga mo-hold og ingon ani kadako na liga,” said Hinay. “After this, among tan-awon unsay among mga lapses aron amo ma-correct tanan kay gusto gyud namo nga andam ug preparado kaayo mi nga mopadagan sa labing una namong season nga magsugod sa second week of February.” — EBV
