CEBU, Philippines —  On the heels of successfully hosting back-to-back national tournaments just a week apart from each other last month, the stream of sports continues to flow in Dapitan City, Zamboanga del Norte.

This time a multi-sport spectacle.

On Sunday, October 9, at the picturesque Dapitan Boulevard, the famed “Shrine City” of the Philippines will be staging the 1st Mayor Seth Frederick “Bullet” Jaloslos Cup triathlon competition showcasing some of the best triathletes across the Mindanao region bannered by the Tri SND Barracuda of Ulwan Dimaporo.

“Kanunay man gyud mi nagpasiugda og triathlon dinhi sa Dapitan sa una pa kay atong gina-hone ang  talents sa atong mga kabatan-onan ilabi na karon nga dali ra kaayo tang makakita og mga batan-on nga nag-bike, nag-swim ug nagdagan,” said Dapitan Tourism Officer Apple Marie Agolong.

“On the part pud sa city government, the new administration is bent on really pushing sports tourism and heritage to its maximum level mao nang ipadayon ni namo ang triathlon,” Agolong added. “We’re so happy nga ang among mayor (Buller Jaloslos) athlete sab, halos tanan seguro nga mga sports kabalo siya unya suportado niya.”

The upcoming race will start with a 500-meter open water swim followed by a grueling 25km bike. It will finish off with a 5km run.

The categories to be contested are the male 17 Under, 18-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50-above and female 25 Under and 26-above.

Agolong said it may only be a small event but they hope to make a big leap out of it towards their bid to host a prestigious 5150 Triathlon event next year.

“We’re very happy nga in the works na ang Dapitan 5150 Triathlon,” said Agolong. “Usa sab na sa purpose nganong amo ning ipahigayon nga triathlon so that makita namo kung unsay among mga kakulangon especially so nga mag-abot ang mga athletes makahatag pud sila og mga recommendations and suggestions sa angayan nga mga buhaton namo.” — EBV
