CEBU, Philippines —  Norman Jasper Montejo bested a tough field of contenders to rule the Coleto Itaas Blitz Series #1, the most latest edition of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association’s weekly online tournament.

The 37-year-old Montejo from Catbalogan City, Samar completed the 11-round Swiss system competition with the highest output of 10.5 points to clinch the title in the all-Cepcans category.

Montejo, who once played for the varsity chess team of St. Mary’s College-Catbalogan, presently works as estate supervisor of the National Housing Authority (NHA) in Eastern Visayas.

Nicanor Cuizon placed second with 8.5 points while Jimmy Ty, Jr. of Tacloban City settled for third with 7.5 points. Completing the top six were International Arbiter Linky Yap, Rosendo Yamyamin, and National Master Rogelio Enriquez, Jr.

In the Cepcans B/Ladies division, Sheila Khan Sepanton reigned supreme with 40 points.

The 29-year-old Sepanton was a Board 1 player for the Central Philippines University in her hometown Iloilo during her college days. She currently resides in Lapu-Lapu City.

Kristina Belano and Reynaldo Flores took the second and third spots with 36 and 33 points, respectively. Making it to the top five were Dr. Leo Lofranco and Nicanor Cuizon.

The twin events were made possible through the support of US-based Cepcan Susan Itaas, who takes pride as the first and only Woman National Master in Cebu chess history. — EBV
