CEBU, Philippines —  Brothers Rommel and Ronald Ganzon swept the top two spots in the 2nd Compostela Mayor's Cup Open Chess Tournament recently at the D. M. Reynes Gymnasium in Compostela, Cebu.

Rommel emerged as champion after completing the 7-round Swiss system competition with the highest output of 6.5 points.

National Master Ronald Ganzon figured in a six-way logjam with Redentor Nailon, Anthony Makinano, Bhell Ortiz, Richard Natividad, and Marlowe Leyco on identical 6.0 points but Rommel's sibling took the second place honors by virtue of a higher tiebreaker.

Interestingly, the Ganzons are both members of the Toledo City Trojans in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), the country's first ever pro chess league.

In all, five Trojans made it to the top eight in the Compostela tilt. Nailon placed third, Natividad sixth, and National Master Rogelio Enriquez, Jr. eighth.

Rounding up the top 10 with 5.5 points each were Rowyn Ontal and Raymond Abellana. — EBV
