Dagami Warriors falter in PCAP title bid

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu’s Cordova Dagami Warriors failed in their title campaign after being swept by the Iloilo Kisela Knights in the two-game Southern Division finals of the import-laced Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) GM Wesley So Cup last Saturday night on lichess platform.

The Dagami Warriors, powered by Israeli Grandmaster Nitzan Steinberg, National Masters Merben Roque and Mario Mangubat, and Woman International Master Bernadette Galas, lost in the first match 8-13, before being finished off by the Kisela Knights via lopsided 5.5-15.5 decision in the second game.

Still, it was a commendable finish for the Dagami Warriors who did not even make it to the playoffs in the season-opening All Filipino Conference of the country’s first ever pro chess league.

After clinching the South crown, the Kisela Knights will face next North champion San Juan Predators in the Grand Finals on Wednesday, August 4. The Predators advanced after ousting AFC titlist Laguna Heroes with the scores of 12-9 and 13.5-7.5

Iloilo is bannered by GMs Joey Antonio and Hovhannes Gabuzyan of Armenia, National Masters Fritz Bryan Porras, John Michael Silvederio, Cesar Mariano, and Giovanni Mejia, and Candidate FIDE Master Cherry Ann Mejia.

San Juan, on the other hand, will pin its championship hopes on GM Oliver Barbosa, IM Ricky de Guzman, Woman IM Jan Jodilyn Fronda, NM Michael Gotel, and Arena GM Gavin Lloyd Ong. — EBV
