Caloy Yulo rolls into vault final but flops at floor

CEBU, Philippines —  Filipino gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo’s campaign to medal in his pet event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics ended up in a big disappointment.

As a world champion, the 21-year-old Yulo is tipped early on among the favorites to clinch gold medal in floor exercise.

But after missing landings in the early goings of his routine, Yulo went on to score only 13.566 for a dismal 44th place in floor exercise of men’s artistic gmynastics qualification at the Ariake Gymnastics Centre on Saturday night.

In the other events, Yulo wound up 24th in the rings with a score of 14, 55th in parralel bars with 13.466, 63rd in horizontal bar with 12.3, and 69th in pommel horse with 11.833.

Only the top eight in all apparatus will advance to the final round and Yulo is way, way behind the mark.

In the individual all-around, Yulo was a far 47th with 79.931 to also miss the cut as only the top 24 will proceed to the final.

If there’s any consolation for Yulo, it was in the vault event where he booked a final ticket after placing sixth overall in the qualifying with 17.712 points.

Yulo will go up against Jeahwan Shin of Korea, Artur Davtyan of Armenia, Nikita Nagornyy of Russia, Adem Asil of Turkey, Denis Abliazin of Russia, Caio Souza of Brazil and Ahmet Onder of Turkey in the vault final on August 2. — EBV
