Sanman’s Jayson Mama set to challenge Edwards for IBF flyweight crown

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Another Filipino boxer will vie for a world title.

In what is by far the biggest break of his budding career, Sanman Gym's Jayson "Smasher" Mama will challenge IBF flyweight champion Sunny "Showtime" Edwards of United Kingdom on September 11 at the Copperbox Arena in London, England.

It's going to be an exciting battle of unbeaten ring gladiators from the opposite hemispheres of the globe.

Mama, 24, is unscathed in 16 fights spiked with 9KOs, while Edwards holds a perfect 16-0 record with 4KOs.

"Sunny Edwards is a great champion but I like Jayson's chances," said Sanman CEO Jim Claude "JC" Manangquil, the manager of Mama. "Jayson is very hungry and he will do everything to be a world champion."

Interestingly, both Mama and Edwards last fought on April 30 this year.

On that day, Mama won by technical decision over Romshane Sarguilla at the Sanmam Gym in General Santos City.

A thousand miles away at the York Hall in London, England, the 25-year-old Edwards stunned the previously undefeated South African champion Moruti Mthalane to seize the IBF flyweight belt.

If victorious, Mama will become the second world champion from Sanmam Gym after Reymart "Assassin' Gaballo, the currently reigns as the interim WBC bantamweight king.
