ARQ boxers ‘locked and loaded’ for maiden show

CEBU, Philippines —  The eight pioneering boxers of ARQ Stable can’t wait to showcase their skills in the first ever event of ARQ Boxing Promotions billed as “Engkwentro Uno” a week from now.

After several postponements since its initial schedule in March, the newest player in Cebu fight scene will finally stage its maiden card on June 19 behind closed doors at Gate 2 of Cosonsa Manufacturing Compound in Ibabao, Mandaue City.

The husband-wife tandem of Jason and Eva Mari Arquisola established ARQ Boxing early this year to give opportunities to aspiring boxers at this time of pandemic.

A day after ARQ’s ground-breaking show was confirmed, unbeaten flyweight contender April Jay “Astroboy” Abne (5-0, 2KOs), his brother Ian Abne, and their stablemates Berland Robles, Zandro “Little Pacman” Librador, John Paul Gabunillas, Yerrodge Gura, Arniel Canete, and Rodex Pala proudly posted their group photo in ARQ Boxing’s Facebook page to show their excitement and readiness to trade blows with their respective foes.

“Our boxers have been waiting for this moment for several months already,” said ARQ Sports Director coach Chelito Caro. “They’re all very excited and hungry to fight.”

ARQ Stable conditioning coach Roger Justine Potot echoed Caro’s thoughts saying that their boxers are a hundred percent ready to go to war.

“We’ve been training relentlessly since the last quarter of 2020. Their boxing skills and tactical training are being supervised by our head coach Eldo and coach Joseph. On my end, we did a strength training program focused on gaining muscle after we transitioned to adding power,” Potot shared.

“With 6-8 months of preparations, I think we are more than ready for the first promotional event of our stable. We have exciting fighters like our main draw April Jay Abne, a former UBS champion, and our upcoming talent, the swift and elusive John Paul Gabunilas. The people would surely be in for a great fight,” Potot ended. - Jay Mar Baynos, CNU Journalism Intern
