GM Wesley So Cup: Cebu teams off to flying starts
CEBU, Philippines — Cebu's bets Toledo City Trojans, Cordova Dutchess Dagami Warriors, and Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warriors got off to winning starts in the GM Wesley So Cup, the reinforced conference of the 1st Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) online tournament played on lichess platform.
Powered by Iranian Grandmaster Amir Bagheri, the Trojans of team owner Engr. Mardee Gacang de la Peña and fully supported by Toledo LGU headed by mayor Joie Perales slammed the Cebu City Machers, 15.5-5.5, in an all-Cebuano showdown.
The Bonn Rainauld Tibod-skippered Trojans made it to the Southern Division semifinals of the previous PCAP All-Fillipino Conference and aim for a stronger finish this time with Bagheri on board.
The rest of the Toledo squad include playing co-team owner Atty. Jeah Jean Gacang, team manager Felix Poloyapoy Jr., International Master Rico Mascariñas, Rogelio Enriquez Jr., brothers Ronald and Rommel Ganzon, Richard Natividad, Glicerio Pardillo Jr., Christopher Tubalado, and Jinky Catulay.
In the other results, the Cordova Dagami Warriors thrashed the Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates, 17-4, while the Naki Warriors whacked the Mindoro Tamaraws, 12-9. — EBV
