Enriquez, Lofranco dominate CEPCA Mother’s Day tilts

CEBU, Philippines —  National Master Rogelio Enriquez, Jr. and Dr. Leo Lofranco shared the limelight in the back-to-back online tournaments staged by the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (CEPCA) on Mother’s Day last Sunday.

Enriquez, coach of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) chess varsity team and currently member of the Toledo City Trojans seeing action in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), topped the All-Cepcans Arena for Group A/B Cepcans and some invited lady players.

Enriquez finished the 13-round Swiss system competition with the highest output og 12.0 points to take home the title.

Engr. Jimmy Ty, Jr. placed second with 9.5 points while Engr. Archie Garzon, Rosendo Yamyamin, and Antonio Cabibil occupied the third to fifth spots with 9.0 points apiece. Kristina Belano completed the top six with 7.5 points.

The Catbalogan City-native Lofranco, on the other hand, lorded it over the Prexy Jerry Blitz Arena for Group B Cepcans and some female pawnpushers.

The 64-year-old Lofranco, a doctor of medicine by profession and one of Cebu’s top chess players during his college days, posted a total of 32 points to claim the top honors.  Engr. Eladio Lim III and Kristina Belano wound up second and third with 30 points each while Nicanor Cuizon and Gabriel Misterio rounded up the top five with identical 21 points.
