Talisay Aquastars make history

CEBU, Philippines — Cebuano hardcourt “Assassin” Patrick Cabahug stole the thunder as the MJAS Zenith Talisay City Aquastars made history by nailing the first ever win in the Chooks to Go Pilipinas Vismin Super Cup.

Cabahug unloaded 22 points on a 9-of-16 shooting from the field as the Aquastars drowned the Tubigon-Bohol Mariners, 104-66, at the start of the country’s first professional basketball league based in southern provinces yesterday at the Alcantara Civic Center in Alcantara town southeast of Cebu.

The Mariners were in  fighting mood only in the early goings of the game.

After Talisay’s Paulo Hubalde scored the first ever basket of the Super Cup, the Mariners rattled four straight points to go ahead, 4-2, with just two minutes gone by in the contest.

That was the only bright moment though for the Boholanos.

Behind the leadership of Cabahug, the Aquastars went on to outscore the Mariners, 26-14, to post a double-digit edge, 28-18, at the end of the opening salvo.

Jan Jamon then joined the scoring spree, drilling in three 3-pointers of his 12 points in the second period where the Aquastars outscored the Mariners, 30-14, to blow up their lead to 26 points at halftime, 58-32. Jamon finished with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Aquastars of coach Aldrin Morante sustained their momentum after the short break to further widen the gap, 84-52, after three quarters.

The outcome of the lopsided match was already beyond question when the Aquastars mounted an imposing 95-56 bulge at the final seven-minute mark. Talisay’s biggest advantage, however, stood at 40 points, 104-64, on a turnaround jumper by Joshua de la Cerna with less than a minute left to play.

Aside from Cabahug and Jamon, the other twin digit scorers for the Aquastars, who pounded the Mariners in bench scoring, 65-20, were Egie Boy Mojica with 11 points and two assists, and Jaymar Gimpayan with 10 points on top of nine rebounds.

Narciso Llagas Jr. topscored for the Mariners with 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists while Joseph Marquez tallied 13 points laced with 11 points and three assists in a losing effort.

Meanwhile, the ARQ Builders Lapu-Lapu City Heroes will make their debut in the league today against the Tabogon-Cebu Voyagers. They will clash at 4 p.m., right before the Dumaguete City Warriors take on the Siquijor Mystics at 7pm.
