Best of the best clash in ‘The Finale’ today

CEBU, Philippines —  The best of the best in Stay at Home Chess Challenge will test each other’s mettle in the grand finals of monthly online tournament aptly billed as “The Finale” scheduled to be played starting at 5 p.m. today on lichess.org.

Event organizer International Master Kim Steven Yap said leading the cast of finalists are Grandmaster Mark Paragua, IM Joel Pimentel Jr., FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri, FM Mari Joseph Turquez, and Cebuano IM Barlo Nadera.

Out to give them a run for their money are National Masters Merben Roque and Rommel Ganzon, Kyle Sevillano, Sherwin Tiu, and Kevin Codinera.

Criselda Cruz and Dave Lavendero complete the 12-man final lineup.

They will be play in a 9-round Swiss system format that is estimated to run for two hours.

The games, which will be hosted by Yap and fellow IM Oliver Dimakiling, will be streamed live on the Cebu School of Chess (CSC) Facebook page.

A total of P32,000 in cash prize is up for grabs in the virtual tilt bankrolled by Chess Infinitum, Inc. headed by its president Benjamin “Boojie” Lim.

The champion will take home P7,000 while the second to fourth placers will pocket P5,000, P4,000, and P3,000, respectively.

The fifth and sixth will receive P2,000 each while the seventh to 12th will get a consolation prize of P1,000. — EBV
