MDC Superb rules ‘Team Battle’ chessfest

CEBU, Philippines —  The MDC Superb Chess powered by National Master Merben Roque, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, and Christopher Boco emerged as champion in the seventh leg of the Stay at Home Chess Challenge dubbed ‘Team Battle’ over the weekend.

Roque tallied 48 points, Pondoyo had 20 while Boco scored 11 for a total of 79 points, the highest in a field of 32 teams to clinch the title of the two-day tilt organized by International Master Kim Steven Yap of the Cebu School of Chess in partnership with Chess Infinitum, Inc. headed by its president Benjamin “Boojie” Lim.

The Cebuano Lakers of Bryle Arellano, Remegio Galenzoga, and Rosendo Yamyamin placed second with 66 points while Team Bachelor’s of Richard Natividad, Redentor Nailon, and Ruel Nuttal wound up third with 57 points.

Let’s Relax Spa manned by NM Rommel Ganzon, Lemuel Montero, and Joseph Caballes finished fourth with 56 points followed by Triple J Chess Stars of NM Jasper Rom, Jimson Bitoon, and Jan Kwan with 52 points.

Rounding up the top eight finishers were AmongUs of  Yves Christian Fiel, Vincent Balena, and Spencer de Guzman with 49 points, SoundMatters of Rey Flores, Bhell Ortiz, and NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr. with 46 points, and CIFYA A of Benjamin Dy, Cephas Saguisabal, and Peterson Sia with 36 points.

Meanwhile, Rey Flores, John Dave Lavandero, and Criselda Cruz were the top senior, kiddie, and female players, respectively.
