Cebuano boxer Gesta among Pinoy WBC “Heroes of Humanity”

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  United States-based Cebuano fighter Mercito “No Mercy” Gesta joined the distinguished list of Pinoy World Boxing Council (WBC) “Heroes of Humanity” that also included Senator Manny Pacquiao, the only eight-division world champion in history.

Also honored by the WBC for their “acts of selfess heroism in the most challenging times which determines and makes us shine as humanity” were Games and Amusements Board (GAB) chairman Baham Mitra, referee Bruce McTavish, a naturalized Filipino from New Zealand, and American-Japanese referee and judge Robert Bridges who now resides in Angat, Bulacan.

The 32-year-old Gesta from Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City was feted for his relentless efforts in  donating hundreds of food packs to the first responders and frontline workers in San Diego County in California where he is now based.

Gesta and his fellow awardees received certificates of recognition and medals from the WBC with an inscription that reads, “Learn From Yesterday, Live For Today, Hope For Tomorrow” and “Thank You For Keeping The World Safe:COVID-19 2020 Hero Of The World.”

“Honored to give back to our first responders. Giving back to my community is always in my heart. It is my happiness and it is my passion. I love the opportunities to give what I have and do more than I can,” Gesta earlier shared about his charitable works that continues until now since he started it last April.

Gesta (32-3-3, 17KOs) was set to challenge the young and undefeated defending champion Hector ‘El Finito’ Tanajara Jr. for the WBC’s USNBC lightweight title last July 24 at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California but the bout was pushed back to another date after Gesta and his wife suffered food poisoning a day before the official weigh-in.
