Tyson-Jones showdown postponed to November
CEBU, Philippines — The highly anticipated comeback fight of the 54-year-old “Iron” Mike Tyson against fellow boxing xx legend Roy Jones Jr., 51, initially slated on September 12 at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California has been reset by at least two months.
Ryan O’Hara of Ring Magazine, considered as the “Bible of Boxing”, wrote on Twitter on Sunday afternoon (Monday Phl time), that “the eight-round exhibition between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones has been postponed until November 28th”.
O’Hara did not provide any other details on the reason behind the change date but T.J. Rivers of bigfightweekend.com, citing a reliable source familiar with the exhibition TV talks, reported that one of biggest issues concerning the pay-per-view show is the financial side of it.
“Without any fans for live gate revenue, it stood to lose significant money,” Rivers stated.
Rivers also surmised that the organizers are playing a waiting game until they can at least have some socially distanced fans present at the venue to generate extra bucks apart from the PPV sales.
As of this writing, both Tyson and Jones haven’t make any comments yet on the rescheduling of their “battle of the aged”. Tyson holds the record as the youngest heavyweight world champion, while Jones made history as the only boxer to turn pro as a junior middleweight and become a heavyweight champ. — EBV
