CEBU, Philippines —  The University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, one of the most winningest ballclubs in the history of Philippine collegiate basketball, will head-hunt for  Cebuano talents via tryouts this weekend at the City Sports Club-Cebu gym.

To be supervised by no less than UST head coach Aldin Ayo, the two-day undertaking is open to players aged 23 years old and below.

There will be two sessions per day, from 7-10 am and from 3-6 pm.

“Hatagan namo og opportunity ang taga Cebu ug mga probinsiyano nga maka-try sa team,” said UST’s Cebuano assistant coach Joph Cleopas.

Those who have potentials will have a chance to be part of the UST varsity team for the UAAP cage wars later this year.

In between the tryouts, coach Cleopas will spearhead the JHOOP basketball skills training camp, from 12nn to 2 pm today at the Benedicto College gym, and on Sunday same time at the Capitol Parish gym.

“Actually, small group lang plano nako ani, limited to 20 players para quality ang training,” said Cleopas, who once played for the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Baby Panthers in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) during his high school days.

The camp is open to aspiring cagers not younger than eight years old. All the participants will receive a JHOOP jersey.

“We will enhance the skills of the participants in ball handling and let them learn new ways how to create shots,” assured Cleopas.

Before hooking up with the Growling Tigers that finished runner-up to the undefeated champions Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP last year, Cleopas served as assistant coach and skills and conditioning trainer of NCAA kingpins San Beda Red Lions from 2016-2018.

Cleopas was also assistant coach of the USPF Panthers in the CESAFI from 2011-2015. The following year, he was hired as strength and conditioning coach of Batang Gilas. EBV
