29th Cebu City Olympics fires off

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - Associated Press

CEBU, Philippines — Close to 10,000 athletes and coaches from different schools take centerstage as the 29th Cebu City Olympics gets underway today at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and vice mayor Michael Rama banner the list of distinguished guests expected to grace the opening program that will promptly start at 2:30 pm.

Highlighting the affair is the selection of Mr. and Ms. City Olympics for both elementary and secondary level.

The multi-sport event is the selection process for the city’s representatives to the 2020 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) Meet.

Aside from the CVIRAA, the Department of Education-Cebu City division also wants to develop potential athletes that will bring honor to the city in national and international competitions someday.

“It is our role to develop the potentials of our athletes. We want to build champions with character, value-laden as they represent and raise the Philippine flag in the global arena not only in CVIRAA or Palarong Pambansa,” said Joeyliza Arcilla of DepEd Cebu City in a press conference yesterday at the CCSC.

Arcilla said he wants Team Cebu City to retain its title in the CVIRAA in dominant fashion.

“In the last CVIRAA, although we defended our title, we have the lowest number of golds ever and that is something we have to look into,” added Arcilla.

The disciplines to be contested in the annual title are basketball, volleyball, archery, gymnastics, football, sepak takraw, arnis, baseball, softball chess, futsal, dancesport, scrabble, table tennis, boxing,  wushu, and pencak silat.
