CEBU, Philippines — Will the University of the Visayas SBP basketball team make it back to the national finals? And will Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Passerelle basketball team improve its silver medal finish from 2018 and join UV in the national finals? These will be answered as the two Cebu champions travel this weekend to Pototan, Iloilo, for the Visayas Regional Finals of the 34th BEST Center SBP Passerelle Twin Tournament backed by Milo.

UV is the defending Small Basketeers Philippines division champion of the Visayas and placed second to La Salle Greenhills in the 2018 national finals held in Pampanga. At this year’s regional finals, they face off against St. John’s Institute of Bacolod, Hua Siong College of Iloilo and Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas. While being smaller than the others, UV is considered a favorite as it relies on speed and hustle to dominate the field.

The current batch is undefeated since the CYBL Summer League and the Cebu leg of the SBP Passerelle tournament.

Meanwhile, SHS-Ateneo de Cebu is out to make up for last year’s runner-up finish to reigning champion St. Robert’s International Academy of Iloilo which is also returning to defend its title. Opposition is also expected from Bacolod champion University of St. La Salle and HERCOR College of Roxas.

Games will be played November 9 and 10 at the Pototan Astrodome. The format calls for the four teams of each division to play in a single round-robin classification phase. The top two teams clash for the Visayas regional championship and a ticket to the national finals, while the other two play for third place.
