SWU, USJ-R gun for win No.2

Emmanuel B. Villaruel - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Southwestern University-Phinma (SWU)-Phinma Cobras and the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars shoot for their second straight win when they go up against separate opponents in the seniors division of the 19th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament today at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the main match of a heavy quadruple-header, the Jaguars will clash with the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors at 5 p.m. while the Cobras will square off against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) Panthers in the third game at 3:30 p.m.

The Cobras, one of the strongest title contenders on account of their championship performance in the pre-season Partner’s Cup, kicked off their campaign with a 66-58 drubbing of the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters.

Likewise, the Jaguars got off to a rousing start with a 72-67 triumph over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats.

Interestingly, the Cobras and the Jaguars will take on rivals who are coming off contrasting fates in their previous matches.

The Panthers scored a morale-boosting 78-72 triumph over the UC Webmasters, while the Warriors were torn into pieces by three-time defending champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, 53-74.

In the juniors division, the UV Baby Lancers hope to bounce back from an embarrassing setback as they battle the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles at 2 p.m.

The Baby Lancers got massacred by the UC Junior Webmaters, 46-87, in a 41-point embarrassment last September 10 that will surely go down as the worst ever defeat suffered by any UV team in the history of Cebu cagedom.

On the other hand, the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons and the UC Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue Campus will try to barge into the column as they take on each other in the 1 p.m. opener.
