USC-NABC Mayor's Cup unwraps tomorrow

CEBU, Philippines —  A total of 30 teams scattered in four divisions will fight it out for hardcourt supremacy in the University of San Carlos-North Alumni Basketball Conference 2019 Cebu City Mayor's Cup, which will come off the wraps tomorrow at the USC North Campus gym.

The event was formally launched by the top USC-NABC officials yesterday at the First 5 Sports Lounge and Cafe along F. Cabahug Street in Barangay Kasambangan, Cebu City.

The 2019 NABC core group is led by USC-NABC President Ernest Evangelista. Ryan Villaflores is the USC-North Alumni Association president while Jax Bautista is the league organizer and commissioner. The division representatives are Jonathan Saso for Division 1, Byol Tan and Tope Osorio for Division 2, and Ian Callet and Dave Guardiario for Division 3.

The contenders are Batches '82, '85, '86, '87, '88, '90 and '91 in the seniors division, Batches '92, '93, '94, '95, '96, '97, '98, and '99 in Division 1, Batches 2000, 2001A, 2001, 2002A, 2002B, 2003, 2004, and 2005 in Division 2, and Batches 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2015 in Division 3.

They will play in a single round robin format. The top two qualifiers will advance outright to the semifinals. Teams No.3 and No.4, on the other hand, will enjoy twice-to-beat advantage over teams No.6 and No.5, respectively, in the quarterfinal round.

The semis is a knockout affair, while the division championship is a best-of-three series.

Meanwhile, a simple opening ceremony will take place before the games at 3 p.m. on Sunday. 

Expected to grace the affair are Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella, Philippine Sports Commissioner Ramon Fernandez and former PBA star now city councilor Dondon Hontiveros. — EBV
