Mandaue bounces back with vengeance: Thrashes Cordova by 29 points in Gov’s Cup basketball

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Enough is enough.

After dropping two straight games by a hairline, the Mandaue City cagers bounced back with fire in their eyes on the way to a 104-75 obliteration of Cordova in the 6th District battle of the 2019 Cebu Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities and Municipalities Under 21 Developmental Basketball Tournament on Friday night at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

It was a sweet redemption of sort not only for Team Mandaue but also for their head coach Gary Cortes, a Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) grandslam champion with the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, after they stumbled to a stunning 88-89 loss to Cordova last March 17 at the Cordova Sports Complex.

Two days before that, Mandaue also suffered a heart-rending 85-86 defeat at the hands of the Consolacion Sarok Weavers at their home turf.

Those back-to-back losses are now a thing of the past for Mandaue after it staved off what could have been an embarrassing early exit.

With only three contending teams in their cluster, all that Mandaue need is to get back at Consolacion to gain the top seeding in the 6th District that would ensure them of a P100,000 bonus going into the quarterfinal round.

Elsewhere, the Alcoy Siloys and Tuburan made strong statements on their serious title campaigns after downing their previously unbeaten foes.

Alcoy pulled off an 86-76 victory that prevented Argao from clinching an outright quarterfinal berth, while Tuburan dealt Balamban its first setback, 86-73.

Alcoy forged a three-way tie with Argao and Samboan in the 2nd District standings with similar 3-1 win-loss records, in the same way with Tuburan and Balamban with 2-1 cards in the 3rd District. Samboan tallied its third win at the expense of Oslob, 86-82.

In the other result, Ginatilan outlasted Malabuyoc, 84-81, to snap out of its two-game skid.

Malabuyoc fell to 1-2 in a tie with Ginatilan in the 7th District Bracket B currently dominated by Alegria with a 2-0 slate. (EBV)
