Cebuano karatekas shine in Bacolod tiff
Caecent No-ot Magsumbol (The Freeman) - February 4, 2019 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines — Another bunch of karatekas under the Cebu-based Association for the Upliftment of Karatedo (A.U.K) glittered with 12 golds, four silvers and three bronzes at the end of the Red Najukajua Invitational Karate Championships yesterday at Robinsons Place in Bacolod City.

Even without their head coach Rhodee Ann Saavedra who is currently in Tagum City for the Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg, the AUK bets still performed well under the guidance of playing coach Felix Calipusan Jr.

Calipusan, of course, set a good example to his wards by winning golds in the senior kata and kumite events.

Maria Cassandra Samson delivered two golds in the 14-15 intermediate kata and 52 kgs. cadets kumite. She also had a silver in the -48 senior kumite class.

Jiel Cabuenas and Isaac Erin contributed two golds each under the novice 8-9 and intermediate 12-13 age groups, while the likes of AJ Villamor, Simon and RJ Macaya handed one gilt each in the novice 10-11, 12-13 and intermediate 14-15 categories, respectively.

Febeb Cabuenas added one gold in the novice 10-11 division, while the rest bagged silver medals from their respective classes including Corine Benedict Sipalay, Gabriela Erin and Roshenne Maira Silva.

Last week, AUK also made waves in Manila after grabbing eight golds, four silvers and eight bronzes in the Manuel Villegas International Cup at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. (FREEMAN)
