GCTA surrenderees moved to Leyte today

Iris Hazel M. Mascardo - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — At least 37 beneficiaries of the GCTA (Good Conduct Time Allowance) law who surrendered to authorities will be transported at 10 a.m. today to Abuyog, Leyte’s Bureau of Corrections (BuCoR) facilities.

The deadline to surrender set by President Rodrigo Duterte is still tomorrow, Sept. 19, but PRO-7 Director Police Brigadier General Debold Sinas said they decided to ferry today via ro-ro (roll-on roll-off) those who already called themselves in.

Sinas said he already ordered the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to finalize the documentation to be submitted to higher authorities.

Nemecio Bacalso, 66, one of the GCTA beneficiaries who surrendered, called on his elder sibling who lives in Barangay Guadalupe to visit him at CIDG-7 before he will be transported today. He was convicted of rape in 1989 and was released last February.

The convicts who will fail to submit themselves before the grace period will be considered fugitives and will be the subject of a manhunt operation. (FREEMAN)
