PRO-7 reminds public: Gun ban still in effect

CEBU, Philippines — The Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7) has reminded the public that the gun ban remains in effect until June 11, 2025, despite the conclusion of the national and local elections on May 12.
The ban, which began on January 12, prohibits the unauthorized carrying, transport, and possession of firearms and other deadly weapons. It also restricts the use of bodyguards or security personnel without proper accreditation from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
PRO-7 Regional Director, Police Brigadier General Redrico A. Maranan, emphasized that election-related restrictions are still being enforced throughout Central Visayas.
“While the voting has ended, the election period is still in effect. The COMELEC gun ban remains in force until June 11, and our law enforcement efforts will continue to maintain post-election peace and security,” Maranan said in a statement.
He also urged the public to remain alert and supportive of authorities.
“Let us preserve the peace we have achieved during the elections and continue to protect our communities from gun-related violence,” he added.
From January 12 to May 18, PRO-7 recorded 397 gun ban violations, leading to 407 arrests and the confiscation of 424 firearms. These included 407 small arms, three light weapons, three improvised or replica firearms, three explosives, and over 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
Authorities attributed these results to intensified Comelec checkpoints, proactive police operations, and cooperation from the community. They continue to encourage residents to report any violations or suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via official hotlines.
The enforcement of the COMELEC gun ban is part of a nationwide effort to ensure peace and order throughout the entire election period, which officially ends on June 12, 2025.
Meanwhile, PRO-7 reported a significant blow to criminal activity in Central Visayas during the period of May 11 to 17, 2025. Operations during this time led to the seizure of more than ?49 million worth of illegal drugs and the arrest of 197 suspects involved in various offenses.
As part of its intensified anti-drug campaign, PRO-7 conducted 76 operations that resulted in the arrest of 89 drug suspects. Authorities confiscated 7,214.67 grams of illegal drugs, with an estimated street value of ?49,059,756.
Efforts to combat the proliferation of loose firearms also yielded notable results. A total of 24 operations led to the arrest of 22 individuals and the recovery of 30 firearms along with 802 rounds of ammunition.
Additionally, a continued crackdown on fugitives resulted in the arrest of 67 wanted persons, including eight individuals classified as most wanted across the region.
Authorities also took aim at illegal gambling, conducting 17 raids that led to the arrest of 19 suspects and the confiscation of ?5,240 in bet money.
Maranan praised the dedication of law enforcement personnel and called on the public to continue supporting efforts to maintain safety in the region.
“These accomplishments reflect our unwavering commitment to eliminate criminality in Central Visayas. We salute our personnel for their dedication and encourage the public to support us in keeping our communities safe,” said Maranan. — (FREEMAN)
