Central Visayas sees crime drop during polls

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Police Regional Office-7 (PRO-7) recorded a significant decline in all major crime indicators during the 2025 midterm elections.

PRO-7 said that based on data from the PNP Crime Information, Reporting and Analysis System as of May 15, 2025, Total Crime Incidents (TCI) dropped from 192 in 2019 to just 55 this year --reflecting a 71.35% overall decrease.

The TCI is composed of two key components, the Peace and Order Indicator which covers major crimes such as murder, robbery, and physical injury, which dropped from 109 in 2019 to 31 in 2025 --a 71.56% reduction-- and the Public Safety Indicator, which includes non-index incidents such as vehicular accidents, which also fell sharply from 83 to 24 --a 71.08% decrease.

These results are credited to several key initiatives including the full deployment of uniformed personnel to polling precincts, strategic use of surveillance and technology, activation of regional incident command and monitoring centers, and close coordination with the Commission on Elections, Armed Forces of the Philippines, local government units, and community stakeholders.

“This sharp decline in crime proves that strategic leadership, disciplined policing, and strong community support work. Guided by the directive of our Chief PNP, Police General Rommel Francisco D. Marbil, we delivered one of the most peaceful elections in Region 7,” said PRO-7 regional director Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan.

Crimes including theft, robbery, and physical injury, which are among the most prevalent in the region, were dramatically curtailed.

On election day alone only six index crimes were recorded, compared to 26 incidents during the 2019 midterm elections --a 76.92% decrease.

As the post-election period continues, PRO-7 remains on heightened alert to preserve peace and order, with response measures in place to deter and address any emerging threats. — (FREEMAN)
