DSWD’s tutoring program beneficiaries to double next year
CEBU, Philippines — The number of beneficiaries under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Tara Basa! Tutoring Program in Cebu City is expected to double before the start of the 2025–2026 school year.
From 6,000 in its inaugural year, the program will now serve approximately 12,000 incoming Grade 2 learners across 67 public schools in the city.
The initiative aims to improve literacy among early-grade students and will run for 20 days starting mid-May and ending in June, excluding Saturdays and Sundays.
In addition to supporting young learners, the program also offers financial assistance to selected graduating students from Cebu Normal University and Cebu Technological University. In exchange, these students will serve as tutors for the program.
This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the Cebu City government and the DSWD.
“We’re not just improving literacy or supporting college students—we’re shaping a brighter tomorrow for our city,” said Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia.
Garcia also expressed his gratitude to the DSWD, the Department of Education (DepEd), local universities and colleges, and other key stakeholders involved in the program's implementation.
“Thank you for standing shoulder to shoulder with us in this vital mission,” said Garcia. —/FPL (FREEMAN)
