More traffic lights in Mandaue City

Kristin De Dios - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The Traffic Management Board of Mandaue City is planning to install additional traffic lights at least in the city's three intersections

Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM) head Hyll Retuya told reporters that the board proposed this initiative to address several traffic concerns.

Retuya revealed that these intersections are located on E.O. Perez Street, C.D. Seno, and D.M. Cortes Avenue.

He explained that since these three areas do not have traffic lights and experience heavy traffic of vehicles daily, these are prone to accidents and even fatalities.

“Mao na siya ang ato-a nga priority areas, sagad ana daghan og fatalities during accidents,” said Retuya.

The traffic head added that the board has considered how traffic lights would assist traffic enforcers assigned to these areas.

He noted that enforcement in these areas is particularly dangerous due to the large trucks passing through, especially along D.M. Cortes Avenue.

“Luoy kaayong mga enforcers dinha oy kay truck corridor baya na dinha,” said Retuya.

Retuya added that with the presence of traffic lights, traffic flow would be more synchronized rather than relying on enforcers to manage it manually.

Currently, at least two enforcers per shift are assigned to these intersections to guide drivers.

Retuya further explained that without traffic lights in these locations, drivers have to estimate when to proceed, increasing the risk of road accidents.

The proposed traffic lights will be an addition to the existing 14 traffic lights at Mandaue City’s intersections.

Aside from installing new traffic lights, Retuya shared that the board also aims to modernize the Traffic System in Mandaue City.

He stated that modernization is necessary as some existing traffic lights are already defective.

Retuya revealed that some of these traffic lights have been faulty since 2012.

The board is targeting to complete both the traffic system modernization and the installation of the new traffic lights within the year. — (FREEMAN)
