BOC Cebu, RMU-7 renew ties in fight vs smugglers, transnational crimes
CEBU, Philippines — The Bureau of Customs (BOC) Port of Cebu has welcomed key officials from the Regional Maritime Unit-7 (RMU-7) in a courtesy visit recently, which marked a renewed commitment between the two agencies to tackle smuggling and other transnational crimes within the region.
Led by RMU-7 Chief Mario Cristino A. Lucero and Operations PCO Arnel C. Anino with BOC-Cebu District Collector Felipe Geoffrey K. De Vera, the meeting revolved around intensifying collaborative efforts to protect Philippine waters and ensure seamless trade facilitation.
According to BOC Port in Cebu, in its Facebook post, that the key discussions included the implementation of joint anti-smuggling operations, issuance of warrants of seizure and detention (WSD) for Maritime Unit-led enforcement actions, and the proposed deputation of RMU-7 personnel to provide additional enforcement support to the Port of Cebu.
These initiatives, the BOC said, aims to streamline operations, ensure stronger enforcement, and deter smuggling networks operating within the area of responsibility.
De Vera has emphasized the importance of unified efforts in combating illicit trading.
“The fight against smuggling requires not just the strength of BOC but the collective efforts of all government agencies. Through this partnership with the Regional Maritime Unit 7, we are bolstering our capabilities to safeguard the region’s borders, protect our economy, and promote legitimate trade,” De Vera said.
Meanwhile, De Vera also recently met with Governor Gwendolyn Garcia to reaffirm the bureau’s commitment to enhance trade efficiency and supporting development initiatives of the Province.
During the meeting, De Vera discussed ongoing efforts to simplify customs procedures, aiming to reduce importation costs and ease business transactions in Cebu.
He assured the governor of the Bureau’s active role in fostering economic growth by working closely with the Provincial Government and key stakeholders.
“The Bureau of Customs is more than just an agency for revenue collection. We are a partner in nation-building. Through streamlined trade processes, we aim to reduce costs for businesses and enhance economic opportunities for Cebu,” said De Vera, who was accompanied by Presidential Assistant for the Visayas, Usec. Terence P. Calatrava during the visit. JG (CEBU NEWS)
