Over 100 faulty weighing scales found

CEBU, Philippines — The Operation Timbangan continues after the discovery of over a hundred faulty weighing scales mostly in Carbon Market.

Operation Timbangan is the Cebu City government’s way of protecting consumers against vendors with defective and uncalibrated weighing scales in public markets.

Market Operations Division head Robert Barquialla initially set May 30 to June 9 for the inspection of weighing scales.

Those with 50 grams or less of discrepancy are being warned and made to pay P500, the city’s Public Information Office reported.

Weighing scales that are over 100 grams of discrepancy, on the other hand, had been confiscated.

For those with only minor discrepancies, aside from the fines, authorized personnel recalibrated them first before returning them to the owners while those that have big discrepancies are no longer returned and instead, destroyed.

With the turnout of the surprise series of inspections, Barquilla has decided to extend its operations this month.

Aside from Carbon, MOD is also doing its rounds in other public markets in the city.

No less than Mayor Michael Rama himself said he wants consumers to get their money’s worth with every gram weighed properly. — (FREEMAN)
