CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu provincial government has provided vaccines against classical swine fever (hog cholera) to different backyard farms in the province.

Data from the Provincial Veterinary Office as of April 26, 2023 showed that 65,040 doses of vaccines were distributed to backyard farms in 24 local government units of the province.

The Capitol is purchasing these vaccines as part of its program to protect the swine population against hog infections.

Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy, provincial veterinarian, said all LGUs will be provided with vaccines for their backyard hog raisers.

“This is to protect sa remaining sa atong population and make their immune system more adoptable to other diseases as well,” Vincoy said, during one of the press conferences with the governor about ASF update in Cebu.

Commercial farms, according to the Capitol, have their own vaccination drive against hog cholera.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia earlier said the Capitol will not just address the African Swine Fever (ASF) but the other hog diseases as well in a move that protects the P11 billion hog industry of the province.

Data from the PVO showed that swine population in the province is pegged at 442,422. Of this figure, 62 percent or 272,109 are from the backyard farms while 167, 313 are from commercial hog raisers. — GMR (FREEMAN)
