Proposed night market along B. Rodriguez St. underway

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  After Colon, the Garbo Asenso Sumbanan Alyansa (GASA) office is gearing up to set up a night market along B. Rodriguez Street.

Mayor Mike Rama said the project is part of his vision for a “Singapore-like” Cebu City.

The night market, according to Rama, can also attract more visitors and help enliven tourism, as Fuente Osmeña is one of the tourist destinations in the midtown area of the city.

“We have to work together on this because we want what is best for Cebu,” Rama said as reported by the city’s Public Information Office.

No exact date had been disclosed yet, but GASA has already asked for the assistance of other City Hall departments in the clearing of sidewalks in the said area.

GASA head Veronica Jimenez noted that stalls and temporary shelters have encroached on the sidewalk, making it hard for them to implement the proposed night market of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.

“Before we can do so, we need to clear them. Ni-encroach na sila sa sidewalk gyud,” Jimenez said.

During the night market, one lane of B. Rodriguez St. would be closed to traffic accordingly.

“Maglisud man gud mi og sugod sa plano kay naa sila. Maong we are meeting here with the concerned offices para among matarong ang clearing operation sab,” Jimenez said.

Representatives of the Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification, and Enhancement team; Market Operations Division (MOD); and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-7 attended the meeting.

“It is good that we are here today aron matarong nato. Magtinabangay lang ta with the concerned offices para matarong nato ug dili nato kalit-kaliton ang atong mga vendors,” said MOD head Wynne Cenas.

Cenas also suggested that it would be best to have the DPWH-7 to lead the clearing operations since they had a road-widening project for B. Rodriguez.

In response, DPWH’s Engr. Dolores Salazar said they would gladly work together with the city on the project.

“We’ll work together and because this is a win-win solution sab for us kay among mapatuman ang road-widening, naa sab tay night market,” said Salazar. — GMR (FREEMAN)
