CEBU, Philippines —  With all the challenges and calamities that have passed, the Cebu City Health Department deemed it necessary to conduct training for barangay health workers in relation to mental health.

According to CHD officer-in-charge, Dr. Jeffrey Ibones, their program on mental health is not new but they just need to have a refresher course for the health workers and what interventions to do.

With this, those who are in need of help will already have someone to go to in their respective barangay, said Dr. Mae Poblacion, the city’s Mental Health Program coordinator.

CHD also has available medicines for those in need although they are also collating other data for other needs to be purchased.

“Ang ubang tambal amo sa nga ipang-gather ang data kung unsa ang ilahang kinahanglan para ato sa ma-purchase ug mahatagan sila kada buwan. Para na dili na ma-problema ang tagsa-tagsa ka pamilya kay dili baya tanan makapalit gyud sa tambal,” said Poblacion.

The CHD also has consultant psychiatrists and psychometricians but they are looking at hiring more to be assigned to the different clusters to better help the residents in dealing with stress, trauma, and the like.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon Odette, the CHD’s psychometricians were assigned to the barangays to give guidance to the locals.

“Kitang tanan kinahanglan ta og maayo nga mental health kay without mental health dili ta makahimo sa inadlaw-adlaw nga buhaton,” stressed Poblacion. — Sanden J. Anadia, GMR (FREEMAN)
