Volume of Holy Week travellers doubled this year
CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu Port Authority (CPA) has recorded and monitored a total of 324,931 passengers in Cebu seaports during the observance of Oplan Byaheng Ayos: Semana Santa and Summer Vacation 2022 from April 10-18, 2022.
In a statement, CPA said that this doubled the data recorded for Holy Week 2021 with approximately 151,000 inbound and outbound passengers.
Based on the CPA consolidated report, a total of 166,039 inbound passengers and 158,892 outbound passengers trooped to seaports to return to their hometowns or spend their vacation in time for the Holy Week.
Despite the influx of passengers, CPA reported that the observance of the Holy Week in Cebu ports was “generally peaceful”.
The implementation of Oplan Byaheng Ayos: Semana Santa and Summer Vacation 2022 was in close coordination with Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Philippine National Police (PNP), Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), partner local government units and partner cargo handling service providers.
It can be recalled that CPA has activated its Oplan Biyaheng Ayos: Semana Santa and Summer Vacation 2022 to ensure the safety, security and comfort of all passengers who will be travelling to their home provinces or cities through the ports for the Holy Week.
The CPA was on heightened alert on the said dates in anticipation of the surge in passenger traffic as COVID-19 restrictions eased.
During this period, CPA deployed additional port police officers in ports with high passenger traffic to enforce port safety and security protocols. —GMR (FREEMAN)
