Unopposed bets celebrate early victory in Tuburan

Gregg M. Rubio - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  The unopposed slate of Tuburan mayoralty candidate, incumbent Vice Mayor Democrito “Aljun” Diamante, yesterday held a campaign caravan that also serves as their early victory celebration for being sure winners in the May 9 elections.

Aljun said the event was their way of expressing their thanks to all political leaders who came together to form the so-called “Hiniusang Pwersa sa Tuburan”.

The unified slate is composed of individuals previously belonging to opposing camps.

The slate includes Aljun’s brother, Mayor Danilo “Danny” Diamante, as his runningmate, incumbent Councilors Eugenio Arigo, Rodillo Dela Cerna, Marvin Monterola, Carmelli “Aming” Suezo, Ray Mathew Laurel, and Louise Potencioso, Dason Lorenz Lagon and Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president Wilfredo Diamante.

Aljun explained that they filed their certificates of candidacy as independent candidates but they are adopting provincial and national candidates.

He said they are supporting the reelection bids of Third District Representative Pablo John “PJ” Garcia and Governor Gwendolyn “Gwen” Garcia of One Cebu Party, Vice Governor Hilario Davide III of Liberal Party, Provincial Board Member John Ismael “Jiembo” Borgonia of One Cebu and PB candidate Jephthah Yapha of Abag-Promdi and Ako Bisaya Party-list Rep. Sonny Lagon.

Aljun said they will decide whom to support for president two weeks before the election day but they are already committed to support Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte for vice president.

Aljun further said that the event yesterday also showed their true commitment of support to the above-mentioned personalities especially to the Garcias  and Lagon.

In the past several elections, the municipality of Tuburan in midwest Cebu had always been considered a hotspot due to intense political rivalry.

After the 2019 elections, Aljun and Lagon took the first step to unite on August 17, 2019 during the Visayas leg fellowship meeting of the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) Kaagapay Class of 1996 held at the Cebu Technological University (CTU) Tuburan Campus.

Aljun and Lagon, who are members of the warring political clans in Tuburan, both adopted members of the Kaagapay Class.

On December 9, 2019, Lagon’s wife, Daphne, and the team of Ako Bisaya Partylist visited the town hall during the Sangguniang Bayan session led by Aljun.

In 2013, Aljun won for a second term as mayor against former mayor Rose Marie Suezo, while Danny won as vice mayor against Daphne.

The Diamante brothers and Daphne are relatives since the latter’s mother was a Diamante.

In 2016, Aljun won against Daphne in the mayoralty race by a slim margin of 46 votes.

In 2019, Daphne ran for mayor but lost to Danny. It was also in the last elections when Sonny got a seat in Congress as partylist representative. — FPL (FREEMAN)
