Comelec reiterates non-issuance of voter's ID

CEBU, Philippines —  The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cebu City has reiterated that it is no longer issuing voter ID cards in anticipation of the roll out of a national identification system.

The poll body made the announcement after registered voters still went to its office asking for IDs.

Omar Sharif Mamalinta, election officer of COMELEC-Cebu City, said Comelec stopped issuing voter IDcards in 2012 following proposals to establish a national ID system.

Republic Act 11055, An Act Establishing the Philippine Identification System, was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte on August 6, 2018. It aims to establish a single national identification system for all citizens of the Philippines as well as resident aliens. This proof of identity is a means of simplifying public and private transactions, including proving eligibility to vote.

But Mamalinta said Comelec offices can issue voter’s certificate only.

"Dugay na ta nga wala mag-release og voter's ID. Kun dunay moadto sa atong office, ang atong mahatag nila kay ang voter's certificate ra gyud," said Mamalinta.

Meanwhile, the voter’s registration will end on September 30.

The public is encouraged to register for the 2022 national elections.

Comelec-Cebu City has established off-site registration centers in various malls in the city.

It also established special lanes for senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.

Mamalinta said the number of registrants is increasing, but there is no official count yet. – KQD (FREEMAN)
