COVID-19 positivity rate in Cebu City goes down

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Cebu City’s positivity rate for COVID-19 infection is inching closer back to the five percent threshold of the World Health Organization (WHO), which is one of the considerations in reopening a place’s economy further.

The city’s latest rate is 6.26 percent recorded the other day.

“This is a series of ups and downs. It depends on our behavior,” said Councilor Joel Garganera, deputy chief implementer of the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Based on EOC’s recent data, only 66 turned out positive out of 1,054 residents tested.

The city’s critical care utilization, meanwhile, is now considered safe at 46.4 percent with only one hospital left at high-risk level.

As for September 21, the city has 1,101 active cases spread in 70 barangays.

Garganera says the lowering of the number of the number of active cases can be attributed to collective efforts of various sectors but he gave a special mention to the police and barangay officials for their efforts in implementing health protocols religiously.

With the city’s quarantine status expected to be lowered further after September, Garganera called on all residents to help bring the numbers down further.

“Ato ning paus-uson pa’g maayo,” he said.

“By the end of the month, we are anticipating lowered restrictions. Luag na sad ta…Permanente lang gihapon ta’g tuman sa atong protocols… duol nang Pasko. Naghinaot ta’ng sa Pasko, kumpleto ta… dili nato na makab-ot kung di ta mag-usa,” Garganera said.

The Cebu City Police Office said it will continue implementing health and quarantine protocols. CCPO Director Josefino Ligan said apprehensions of violators contributed significantly to the lowering of infections and of cases.

Apprehensions will continue, he said.

“It is in this period nga mas pahugtan pa nato and religiously observe the health and safety protocols para mapadayon nato ang pag-lower sa cases nato until maka-celebrate na ta’s December,” he said. — JMO Decemay P. Padilla (FREEMAN)
