2,023 get cash aid; 108 families graduate from 4Ps in Lapu-Lapu City

Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon (The Freeman) - June 14, 2021 - 12:00am

CEBU, Philippines — A total of 2,023 beneficiaries in 24 barangays in Lapu-Lapu City received P1,500 each totaling to P3 million from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Also, 108 families in the city have graduated recently from the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) of DSWD.

The beneficiaries received such assistance through DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation in coordination with the office of Lapu-Lapu City Lone District Representative Paz Radaza.

“Lisod gyud karon kay pandemic, daghan ang nawad-an og panginabuhian, mao nga kining financial assistance nga atong gihatag karon dakong alibyo kini sa ilang kahimtang," said Radaza during the recent distribution of the cash assistance.

Radaza urged the beneficiaries to purchase essential goods out of the financial assistance they have received for their respective families as she promised to continue to exert efforts on looking for funds for the benefit of more Oponganons through her congressional office.

She also urged her constituents to just go to her office for those in need of medical assistance, burial assistance and educational assistance including hospitalization at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

“Dili lang gyud maowaw nga moduol sa opisina kay abli ra ni atong opisina alang sa nagkalain-laing assistance para sa mga Oponganon,” Radaza added.

Mewnhile, after more than 10 years under government support, the 108 families have already crossed hardship as they are now economically independent from government assistance.

City Social Welfare and Development Office head Annabeth Cuizon said these 108 families are part of the 6,180 4Ps families since 2010 wherein while still members of 4Ps, these families get monthly subsistence allowance from the national government through DSWD.

Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan said they are victorious, like Lapu-Lapu against Spanish invaders 500 years ago.

“Karong adlawa lain usab nga makasaysayanon nga kasaulogan nga atong gipahigayon mao ang 108 ka 4Ps beneficiaries nga pormal na nga mo-gradwar human sila nagmadaugon sa gubat batok sa kalisod, victory against poverty,” said the mayor during the recently concluded graduation ceremony.

Chan said he will give each graduate P4,600 “pabaon” for their start-up.

The mayor added that these graduates, mostly mothers whose children are now professionals or have a family of their own, may join the city’s accredited organizations, like KALIPI, and get free livelihood training.

KALIPI is a federation of women's organizations developed by the DSWD to each local government unit to support and empower women.

The 4Ps became law in April of 2019. It is a national poverty reduction strategy and a human capital investment program that provides conditional cash transfers to poor families to improve their health, nutrition, and education. — GMR (FREEMAN)
