CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu provincial government has extended P12 million in financial assistance to the town of Balamban for the construction of a footbridge in one of its barangay.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia handed over the check to Balamban Mayor Alex Binghay during her recent visit to the town.

The fund will be used to construct the Ubogon bridge that will connect Barangay Ubogon in Asturias town and Sitio Ubogon, Barangay Liki in Balamban.

Binghay thanked the Capitol for the assistance saying it will help residents in the area, especially students from Asturias who go to school in Barangay Liki.

“Kining maong tulay sa panahon sa tigbaha ang mga estudyante intawon gikan sa Ubogon nga motungha sa high school sa Balamban dili gyud tawon makalabang (When it floods, students from Ubogon cannot cross to their high school in Balamban so this bridge is important),” Binghay said.

“Unya kun mopugos og labang, peligro kaayo alang sa kinabuhi sa mga tinun-an (It will be dangerous for the students to cross during the floods),” he furthered.

The assistance extended to Balamban is taken from the Capitol’s hefty fund for infrastructure projects in different towns and cities in the province. The fund will be used to build bridges, roads, schools and hospital buildings, among others.

In the area of infrastructure, the Capitol is targeting 400 kilometers of provincial roads and 100 kilometers of barangay roads finished by 2021.

Last year, Garcia asked the province’s constituents to be patient with these projects acknowledging that there are more roads that need to be improved in the future.

“At least we are doing something, given all the challenges, nag-pandemic pa ta, naglisod pa atong contractors pag-cross borders pero gipadayon, wala gyud na nato paundanga ug wala ta gyud tay girealign sa 2020 budget intended for in-frastracture, concreting of roads, provincial and barangay,” Garcia said.

The Capitol will also continue to work on upgrading the water systems. — JMD (FREEMAN)
