CEBU, Philippines — A police officer who had gone absent without official leave (AWOL) was shot dead by unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen at around 3:20 p.m. yesterday in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City.

Police Corporal Rodel Demaangay, 40, succumbed to several bullet wounds in his body.

Police Captain Jonathan Dela Cerna, Labangon Police Station chief, said Demaangay is currently assigned in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) but had not been reporting for duty since September last year.

"Pero i-check pa gyud nato ang status ani niya," said Dela Cerna.

Initial investigation showed that the policeman was sitting along Bia Street in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City when the unidentified attackers appeared and started shooting him.

Investigators are looking at personal grudge and work as motives behind the killing.

"Atong tan-awon basin naa sad ni personal grudge sa iya or work-related," said Dela Cerna.

He said they are now gathering CCTV footages in the area to help them identify the perpetrators. — FPL (FREEMAN)
