City logs record-high COVID-19 deaths

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City recorded the most coronavirus-related deaths in a single day.

Friday’s 40 fatalities—the city’s highest one-day toll yet—pushed the city’s deaths near 600.

The deaths were recorded from April 30 to August 6.

On July 9, the city had 26 deaths, the second highest number of fatalities reported in a single day since lockdown was imposed in March.

The reports of coronavirus deaths were reported late because of several reasons, including late processing of the swab test and releasing of its result.

The city continues to bear the brunt of the citywide surge, with 9,162 COVID-19 cases and 577 deaths over the course of the pandemic, according to the data released by the Department of Health (DOH) in Central Visayas.

Of the total COVID-19 cases, 1,825 are active cases.

The unprecedented deaths from coronavirus and other causes are also taking a toll on mortuaries and crematoriums in the city. Also, hospitals are overwhelmed and burial grounds are lacking.

This prompted the city government to build a new public cemetery.

On the other hand, the trend of new COVID cases is improving.

For the second time around, the city’s COVID-19 cases dropped. It only logged 13 new cases on Friday.

On August 6, the city also reported 13 new cases in a day.

The following day, August 7, the city also had a low number of cases at 21. — KQD (FREEMAN)
