OFWs assured seamless return to hometowns

Lorraine L. Ecarma - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  In the Province of Cebu, returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will be assured a speedy homecoming.

Sugbo News, the official news outlet of the Capitol Public Information Office, released a news report yesterday saying that Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has directed mayors to accept and assist all OFWs going home to their respective local government units (LGUs).

This was communicated through a memorandum sent out to the local chief executives in response to a report that an OFW was reportedly barred from entry by barangay officials in Catmon, Cebu.

Sugbo news added the memorandum is meant to ensure that OFWs, who have fully complied with the documentary requirements and safety protocols, would not have to face additional hurdles upon entering their hometowns.

"Under no circumstances shall returning OFWs be denied entry into their residence within the local government unit," the memorandum read.

After the five-day quarantine period in Cebu City required after they disembark at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport, OFWs will be transported home through service vehicles arranged by their respective LGUs.

Within the five days of mandatory quarantine, LGUs are expected to conduct "special preparations" in the households of each OFWs.

This is so OFWs can immediately undergo home quarantine upon their return home. While under home quarantine, COVID-19 monitoring teams shall regularly check on the health of the OFWs.

Apart from this, Garcia also ordered that barangay and sitio checkpoints be lifted from the province’s component cities and municipalities.

Only checkpoints manned by the Philippine National Police would remain until further notice.  GAN (FREEMAN)
